Lockdown had many negative impacts and constraints on our lives while we cocooned ourselves. However, it also gave us time to reflect on the many things we do not discern or appraise. I Through this piece I hope to challenge the innovative the way in which we look at the world through everyday materials. I predominantly work with the polyester material, VELCRO. There is a sense of connection to these hook and loop ribbons through my childhood memories. I strives to push the boundaries of my practice through scale and colour with the creation of a highly sensory environment where both luminosity and acoustics alter as you explore the piece. The sculpture was been specially crafted for the exhibition using over 650metres of hook and loop fastening tape. ‘Fionn’ is the namesake of the mythical Northern Irish giant, Fionn Mac Cumhaill. Legend speaks of Fionn’s size, strength and skill, but in particular the ability to outwit his enemies through disguise. \ Fitzpatrick has taken a heavy industrial material, sculpted it, disguising it as a giant lighting sculpture standing over two and a half meters long. Faced with the prospect of starvation, incarceration in the workhouse, or survival through informal and socially stigmatised means, these women occupied a precarious position at the fringes of society. Residing primarily on the margins of garrison towns on the Curragh, they inhabited makeshift shelters colloquially known as “she-barracks.” Lacking formal housing, many constructed rudimentary dwellings by hollowing out the ground beneath furze bushes, an adaptive strategy that gave rise to the epithet “Wrens,” evoking the nesting habits of the bird. Their living conditions reflected acute poverty, food insecurity, and social exclusion, compounded by their responsibility for dependent children. The Curragh Wrens were subject to intense public scrutiny, particularly during the 1860s, when their lives were documented through the moralising lens of Victorian journalism. Such representations frequently reinforced dominant narratives of deviance and immorality, obscuring the structural conditions that shaped their circumstances. Despite systemic marginalisation—including exclusion from local towns and exposure to violence—the women established a form of collective organisation characterised by mutual aid, shared resources, and emotional interdependence. This cooperative social structure functioned as an alternative support system in the absence of institutional care. This artwork draws upon these historical narratives and situates them in dialogue with the artist’s socially engaged practice, particularly her work with women and children seeking refuge from forced marriage, displacement, and conflict. Upon this whaling ship, The Aurora, was another Limavady man Edgar Wilson Smith (Ted) serving as a Fireman. Led by artist Rachel Fitzpatrick the group have collaborated to create an intricate installation of origami whales highlighting courage, survival and hope. Just like the white ice interrupting the journey of the adventurers, a brain injury can also strike unexpectantly leaving you feeling trapped. Reframing VI - Abstract (Copy) Abstract Reframing VI installation is a collaborative artwork created with people living with acquired brain injury (ABI) from the charity Brain Injury Matters. It was inspired by objects in The Art of the Possible exhibition at the Ulster Museum, as well as the flowing organic work of artist Joseph Walsh, whose sculptural forms influenced the piece’s sense of movement and connection. The installation was developed through a series of creative workshops where participants explored materials, shared experiences and worked together to shape the final piece. Using origami, the group created a large installation made up of brightly coloured paper “brains.” Each one is unique, reflecting personal stories, emotions and relationships after brain injury, while also forming part of a larger, connected whole. The act of folding and scrunching was both calming and engaging. It gave participants a simple structure to follow, while still allowing space for creativity and self-expression. Over time this process supported focus, coordination and a sense of ownership in the work. Arranged in flowing, wave-like formations, the installation reflects the reality that life after brain injury is not a straight path. Instead, it moves in cycles of challenge, adjustment and renewal. The piece explores how relationships and emotions shift over time and how people find new ways to understand themselves and others. At its heart, Reframing VII is about shared experience. No single contribution stands above another; the meaning comes from bringing everything together. It becomes not just an artwork, but a space for connection, understanding and mutual support. Different versions of the Reframing series have also been exhibited internationally, including at Pennsylvania State University and Trinity College Dublin, extending the reach of these shared stories to wider audiences. This piece has been specially created for the Mental Health Arts NI Mindset Festival, BELONGING 2026. Developed as part of a practice-based PhD, the project explores whether museum craft collections and collaborative making can support creative health, identity reconstruction and social connection following ABI. Inspired by objects in THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE exhibition at the Ulster Museum and the organic sculptural forms of Joseph Walsh, the installation emerged through a series of facilitated creative workshops. Participants used an accessible origami process to create individually folded paper ‘brains’ that collectively form a large-scale installation. The repetitive nature of folding provided cognitive structure while enabling creativity, reflection and participant agency. The installation's flowing composition represents the non-linear experience of life after ABI, reflecting adaptation, resilience and evolving relationships. Each individual contribution is valued equally, with meaning emerging through collective participation and shared authorship. As both an artistic outcome and research artefact, Reframing VI explores the potential of co-designed, arts-based practice to promote wellbeing, belonging and inclusive cultural participation.
