Dúlamán
Reconnected, Down Arts Centre , Downpatrick 2023
ABSTRACT
Inspired by the Irish folksongs of the seaweed men (Dúlamán). These men collected seaweed from the shores of Carlingford to sell in the market town’s of Newry and Belfast. Legend has it that these charmer’s would steal the heart of the daughters of the local farmers. They would then threaten to run away with the daughters if the farmer did not buy the seaweed from them. These songs are now sung to infants to warn them about the boogie man and not be enchanted by something bright and shiny!
The piece is created from pigmented velcro and suspended from stainless steel rods. The images and videos below are from the solo exhibition RECONNECTED in Down Arts Centre, Downpatrick. 2023.
